On the 22nd of March, the UN’s World Water Day is taking place and will continue to focus on the importance of giving people the right to have access to fresh water. This year’s theme will pose the question; ‘Why waste water?” and will look at the relationship between water and wastewater in the search to improve water quality and look at treating and reusing wastewater.
Globally, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society, flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused. Yet, 900million people still do not have access to safe water with over 663 million people living without a safe supply of water close to home.
For the 1.2 billion people living in areas of water scarcity, where sanitation is poor and infrastructure is inadequate, a good option is to consider water waste as a solution rather than a problem.
Why waste water?
The world’s population is ever-growing, with urban populations expected to double from 3.4 billion people to 6.4 billion by 2050; with slum- populations growing even faster. Accompanied with this comes infrastructure, water and sanitation demands. By 2030, water demand is set to grow by 50%. Therefore, instead of wasting water, we need to reduce and reuse it.
